Sea Girt is a tiny seaside community residing on barely more than a square mile of idyllic Jersey Shore beachfront! TAKE A TRIP BACK IN TIME
Created from a portion of neighboring Wall Township in 1917, Sea Girt was named for the long-standing estate home of Commodore Robert F. Stockton, known for helping to take California during the Mexican-American war.
Like many of the nearby communities on this stretch of scenic New Jersey coastline, Sea Girt started its life as a popular summer vacation destination for wealthy New Yorkers. Many of those iconic estate homes still remain standing, lending the area a pleasing historic vibe. Unsurprisingly, Sea Girt is also less than a two hour drive from downtown Manhattan.
SEA GIRT COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHTS
The Sea Girt Lighthouse is a historic site maintained by the Sea Girt Lighthouse Citizens Committee. The lighthouse is one of only 20 remaining lighthouses that are still operational in New Jersey and actually predates the borough of Sea Girt itself. Built in 1896, the iconic lighthouse has seen numerous different applications including a spell as the Sea Girt public library. The lighthouse is now open to the public for tours on Sundays for portions of the year.
The south end of the town is taken up largely by the National Guard Training Center, along the shores of Stockton Lake. In addition to being a major National Guard training facility in the state of New Jersey, the landmark provides numerous programs for locals, with a special emphasis on youth programs. Various sports events and camps take place on the property throughout the year!
