Competing to Be the Greenest
As Rick Schwolsky, editor-in-chief of EcoHome magazine, says, “We’re fighting over who is greener.”
Many credit the U.S. Green Building Council, which developed the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) to certify commercial buildings, as the leader in the industry. But the National Association of Home Builders has grabbed the green ball and run with it, first by certifying new homes as green and now by adding an “Emerald Green” certification for remodeled properties. It also has trained 5,700 people in green building techniques and certified 1,500 builders.
And don’t overlook the most visible program, the Environmental Protection Agency’s stamp of green approval, Energy Star. One in seven new homes is rated Energy Star efficient.
