New York Resident feature Clayton & Clayton Realtors - A Gem to Invest in on the Jersey Shore
Issue: New York Resident
2011
Forget the hassle of the Hamptons this summer and check out the quaint village of Bay Head New Jersey, an elegant and laid back community located just 70 miles south of New York City in Ocean County. Getting there is easy. You can take New Jersey Transit from Penn Station to Long Branch and then transfer to Bay Head Station which is the last stop on the train. The total travel time is approximately one hour and forty minutes. “It’s a beautiful and low key summer vacation spot for families who want a relaxing beach vacation without having to sit in hours of traffic or deal with the bustling party scene of the Hamptons or other popular east coast vacation towns”, notes Shawn Clayton of the Clayton and Clayton agency. Mr. Clayton’s firm the oldest in the area has been selling and renting luxury beach and bay front vacation homes along the New Jersey Shore for 80 years but he singles out Bay Head as being a distinctly unique town,” it’s like Nantucket transplanted to the Jersey Shore” with its secluded beaches, antique shops and tree lined streets with charming shingle –style Victorian homes. The village also features several quaint Victorian era bed and breakfast inns that are all within walking distance to the beach as well as lots of activities for families including: biking, sailing, surfing, kayaking, and fishing. Bay Head is also home the Bay Head Yacht Club, a 120 year old establishment where several sailing Olympians have competed.
In recent years Bay Head and its affluent neighbor Mantoloking have been attracting an elite clientele of Wall Street executives and corporate CEO’s who love the secluded beaches and small town New England charm as opposed to the often pretentious and formal Hamptons scene. “It’s so nice to be able to go out to a great dinner in jeans and not feel under dressed” said Jennifer Orr a long time resident of the village. Over the last year, Mr. Clayton’s firm has doubled its annual home sales despite the recession and he believes that the market will continue to grow as many affluent clients are deserting the Hamptons and finding value in larger homes with direct ocean front and Barnegat Bay views. Although prices are lower than the Hamptons, they’re still pricey with beach front homes starting at approximately four million dollars; “to invest in a unique Oceanfront home could be around six million” notes Mr. Clayton. Renting is a more reasonable option and costs between $4,000 to 15,000 per week.
