JERSEY SHORE — The Jersey Shore consists of roughly 130 miles of coastline stretched over dozens of Shore towns, all of which, according to this year’s New Jersey Division of Travel and Tourism commercials, maintain their own, “unique” character — never more evident than during the three and one-half months between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when the Shore comes alive for the summer season.
But how is this possible? How do more than 50 small communities crammed into a relatively small span in the same state, with the same climate and the same terrain, develop such distinct individual identities? The answer, it seems, boils down to an influential part of each Shore town: The business community.
