Museums to Visit in Bay HeadNestled within the heart of the Barengat Peninsula, the intimate town of Bay Head, NJ has a story to tell. While just under 1,000 people call the oceanfront properties in this borough home, the community has long held a prominent place in New England. The museums that have been created in this community pay homage to its settlement, its history and the industries that impacted the community at-large.

Visitors and residents alike find that spending a day at one or both of these museums allows them to learn more about this special place and to have a greater appreciation for the role it has played in the history of the state.

Bay Head Historical Society Museum

The Loveland Homestead was once the home to the Loveland family, a prominent family who helped settle Bay Head and the surrounding area. The home, which was built in the mid-19th century, is now the base for the Bay Head Historical Society Museum. This museum is dedicated to providing residents and visitors with information about the foundation of the community as well as the history of the home itself.

Visitors who arrive at the museum will find a collection of artifacts and photographs that showcase what life was like several centuries ago. It would be easy for someone to spend hours walking throughout the corridors of the home, inspecting the memorabilia and learning more about the storied history of the community.

Of course, visitors have much more to explore on the grounds as well. The Slade Dale cottage on-site provides information about the sailors who have long called Bay Head home. There's also traditional Victorian gardens that visitors can stroll through and enjoy.

The museum is open on Fridays and Saturdays from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Those who are interested also may enjoy the online exhibitions that are available on the museum's website. There also are special events hosted at the Loveland homestead throughout the year.

Vintage Automobile Museum of New Jersey

The Vintage Automobile Museum of New Jersey is located near Bay Head, and is the only museum of its kind in the state. This museum is dedicated solely to the historical automobiles that represent the formation of a powerful industry in the United States. It was established in 2002, and has grown to be a distinguished museum in the community.

The museum often has new exhibits and collections available for people to browse. One popular exhibit includes the "My Other Car" exhibit, in which members showcase their collectible cars that they have been repairing or refurbishing for years. This gives car lovers an opportunity to look at what others have done with their vintage vehicles, and to provide them with inspiration for their own.

This unique museum is open from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday. On Saturday, there are extended hours and the museum is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. In addition, the museum boasts free admission.
